When someone walks in and says, “I don’t want anything too strong,” I get it. The last thing you want for your first cigar is to feel dizzy halfway through. Strength matters—but it’s not just about nicotine. It’s also about how bold the flavor is, how the cigar feels on your palate, and how long it lingers.
Here’s how I break it down when someone asks in the store:
Mild
If you’re just starting out, go mild. These cigars are smooth, mellow, and easy to smoke without feeling like too much. You’ll get flavors like cream, cedar, nuts, or soft spice, but never harsh.
A great mild option we have right now is the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real. Dominican-made with a silky Connecticut wrapper, it’s smooth with a light creamy finish. Very forgiving and great for beginners.
Another good choice is the Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente Natural. This cigar is known for its balance and easygoing flavor. Slight sweetness, smooth draw, and consistent every time. You’ll find it in stock at Tinder Box.
Medium
If you’ve already had a couple cigars and want something with a bit more flavor, go medium. These cigars offer more body and complexity without being overpowering.
A medium pick is the Crowned Heads Mil Días, which blends Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobaccos with an Ecuadorian wrapper. Tastes like toasted nuts, a little spice, and has a creamy base. Still smooth, just a little more going on.
Full
Full-bodied cigars are rich, complex, and bold. They’re not necessarily stronger in nicotine, but they hit harder in flavor. If you’re new, I don’t recommend starting here—but once you’re ready, they’re worth trying.
Padron 3000 Maduro is a great example. Nicaraguan-made, dark and oily wrapper, and delivers flavors like cocoa, espresso, and pepper. Smooth, but with power. It’s not a beginner’s cigar, but it’s one you’ll want to work toward.
Final Tips
-
If you’re not sure what strength to try, start mild and work up.
-
Don’t confuse flavor with strength—some full-flavored cigars are still smooth.
-
Ask yourself how long you want to smoke. Stronger cigars tend to last longer and burn slower.
