The Black Star Line Eugene Bullard honors one of the most extraordinary — and most overlooked — American lives of the 20th century. Born in 1895 to the son of an enslaved man, Eugene Bullard made his way to France as a young man, boxed professionally, and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion at the outbreak of World War I. He eventually joined the Lafayette Flying Corps — becoming one of the few Black pilots to fly during World War I, a distinction the U.S. Army Air Service refused to recognize when America entered the war. He returned to Paris a decorated combat veteran, opened a gym and a nightclub, and counted Langston Hughes and Louis Armstrong among his friends. A life of perseverance, courage, and groundbreaking achievement.
Founder Aric Bey's blend for the release is a fitting tribute: rich, complex, and quietly powerful. Handcrafted at La Zona in Estelí, Nicaragua, the Eugene Bullard pairs a dark, oily Mexican San Andrés wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The 5½ × 46 corona gorda vitola keeps the smoke focused and refined — a size that rewards attentive smoking. Expect notes of dark chocolate, earth, sweet spice, cedar, and a peppery finish that develops beautifully across the burn.
